When this manual was written, EndNote commands were available in Word 2008 and 2011. EndNote commands appear in Word on the Tools menu in an EndNote X9 submenu.
If you do not see these commands, Word support was not correctly installed. If you installed Microsoft Word 2008 or 2011 after installing EndNote X9 , or if you have a customized startup folder for Word, you should either reinstall EndNote or use the Customizer to copy just the Cite While You Write files. Try these three ways to install CWYW (after each attempt, start EndNote and then Word to check for an EndNote submenu on the Tools menu in Word):
Use the Customizer:
a. Make sure no applications are running—including virus protection software and Microsoft Word.
b. Start the EndNote program.
c. From the EndNote menu, select Customizer.
d. On the “Component Selection” dialog, select the components you want to install (or keep installed) and click Next.
Try reinstalling EndNote.
Install the files manually as described below.
Word normally uses a default startup folder. For example:
Microsoft Office 2008/Office:Startup/Word
Microsoft Office 2011/Office:Startup/Word
However, Word’s startup folder location could have been changed. If you are unsure which startup location is being used, or to change the startup location, use these instructions.
To determine the path of Word’s Startup Folder:
Start Microsoft Word.
From the Word menu, select Preferences.
Select the File Locations item and look at the “Startup” line to see the path for the designated startup folder.
If the Startup line is blank, or if you would like to change the startup folder location, select the Startup line, click Modify, select the desired folder, and save your changes. We recommend using the default folder location indicated above.
Quit from Word. This step is important!
You need to copy files as described below.
To install support for Word 2008 and 2011:
From the folder: EndNote X9/Cite While You Write
Copy the files:
EndNote CWYW Commands.dot EndNote Online CWYW
Paste the copied files into the folder:
Users/[your folder]/Library/Application Support/EndNote
From the folder: EndNote X9/Cite While You Write-- Copy the file called:
EndNote CWYW Word 2008.bundle OR EndNote CWYW Word 2008.bundle
Paste the copied file into Word’s Startup folder. See “Determining the Microsoft Word Startup Folder” above.
When word processor support is correctly installed, you will see EndNote commands on the Tools > EndNote X9 submenu in Word.
